Helen Keller became ill while she was still a baby. The illness caused her to lose her sight and hearing. Because she couldnt see or hear， she didnt know how to speak. Helen was shut off from the rest of the world.

At age 7 Helen had a teacher. Her name was Anne Sullivan. Anne was nearly blind as a child. She knew how it felt not to see. Anne taught Helen through touch. She spelled out letters on Helens hand. The letters spelled the names of things. Anne placed those things in Helens hand. Soon Helen knew how to spell words.

Helen wanted to learn more. At age 10 she began to learn to speak. By age 16 Helen could speak very well. She went to college and made top grades.

After college Helen worked to help other people who were blind. She encouraged （鼓励） them to have hope and to be brave. She wrote many books about her life. She gave speeches all over the world. She raised lots of money for blind people. Helen Keller became a heroine to people everywhere.

A king wanted to see what his people were really like. So he dressed up like a poor man and went for a walk. After a while he got tired and hungry. When he asked people for food， they laughed and threw rocks at him.

Then the king came to an old house in the countryside. A poor old man and woman lived there. They asked the king to eat with them. They didnt know he was the king. They just wanted to help a tired， hungry man. The woman made a fire. Then she brought cool water for the king to drink. While she was doing this， the old man went outside. He picked some food from the tiny garden. Then he tried to catch a chicken for supper. But the chicken ran fast， and it rained heavily. So he chose some eggs instead.

The woman cooked supper for them. They gave the king the best food. Suddenly there was a knock at the door. The old woman opened it and saw some neighbours.

“Great king， we threw rocks because we didnt know its you.” The king was angry. “I was tired and hungry. You gave me only rocks and bad words. Get out of here！” he shouted.

The poor man and woman were afraid. The king was used to nice food， but they gave the king only bread and eggs. The king said， “You gave me the best you had. Because you were kind， Ill give money and food to you for the rest of your lives.”
